Monteleone di Spoleto
By Emanuela Scarponi, AfricanPeople News
The picturesque mountain town of Monteleone di Spoleto, in the heart of Italy’s Umbria region, became the setting for a remarkable summer sporting encounter that brought together football, tourism, culture and international friendship.
Led by Marisa Angelini, Mayor of Monteleone di Spoleto, and renowned football coach Roberto Landi, the initiative welcomed young Ghanaian footballers to the historic Italian community, creating an inspiring bridge between Africa and Europe.
Situated at approximately 978 metres above sea level, Monteleone di Spoleto is regarded as the highest town in Umbria. Beyond its breathtaking mountain landscape and historic character, the town is particularly renowned for the ancient Etruscan Chariot of Monteleone, an extraordinary archaeological treasure discovered in the area and now preserved at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Football Meets Culture and Tourism
The sporting initiative attracted considerable attention across the region, with visitors and residents coming from neighbouring villages to watch the training sessions and experience the international atmosphere created by the arrival of the Ghanaian players.
The team, Steadfast F.C., is a Ghanaian professional football club based in Tamale in Ghana’s Northern Region. The club was founded by Ghanaian politician Haruna Iddrisu.

Rather than travelling to Dubai for their training programme, Italian football coach Roberto Landi proposed that Ghanaian footballers experience Italy, with Monteleone di Spoleto selected as their base.
The town offered excellent sporting facilities, while Mayor Marisa Angelini warmly welcomed the young athletes. Their presence quickly became much more than a football story. It became an opportunity for cultural exchange and tourism promotion.
During their stay, members of the team and visitors also explored the town’s heritage and museum, discovering the fascinating history surrounding the ancient Etruscan civilisation.
Roberto Landi: A Football Career Across Continents
Roberto Landi, born in Forlì in 1956, brings extensive international experience to the initiative. He began his football career as a goalkeeper and played for several Italian and international clubs, including Piacenza, Siena and the New York Cosmos.
He later developed a distinguished career as a coach and manager, working in different parts of the world. Among his international assignments were responsibilities with Georgia’s youth teams and the senior national team of Liberia.

Landi is currently preparing Steadfast F.C. for upcoming matches in Rimini, continuing an association with African football that has taken him across borders and cultures.
Monteleone and Ghana: A New Tourism Connection
What began as a sporting opportunity has developed into something much larger.
The initiative has opened the door to stronger cultural and tourism relations between Monteleone di Spoleto and Ghana. Following the successful experience, the Ghanaian government has expressed its intention to invite a delegation from Monteleone di Spoleto to Accra.
There are also plans for the sporting exchange to return to Monteleone next July, creating what could become an annual meeting point for football, tourism and cultural diplomacy.
For Mayor Marisa Angelini, the arrival of the Ghanaian team has offered an opportunity to demonstrate that even a small Italian mountain community can play a role in international cooperation.
Sport as a Language Without Borders
The partnership between Marisa Angelini and Roberto Landi demonstrates how sport can become a powerful instrument of international friendship.
From Monteleone di Spoleto to Accra, from Italy to Ghana, and from Europe to Africa, football is creating connections that extend beyond the pitch.
Sport brings young people together, encourages cultural understanding and opens doors for tourism, investment and friendship. It provides a universal language through which people from different backgrounds can communicate and learn from one another.
The Monteleone experience therefore represents more than a football training camp. It is a small but meaningful example of how grassroots initiatives can contribute to stronger relations between Africa and Europe.
As the next edition approaches, the dream is already taking shape: more exchanges, more visitors, more cultural discovery and a stronger relationship between Ghana and Italy.

BUONE VACANZE A TUTTI

Giampiero Massolo, l’on.
